Credit Karma

This popped into my inbox today and I decided to check it out.  It's another site where you can access your credit score for free.  The difference...it's ALWAYS free...no hidden costs!  You can check it whenever you want and be charged NOTHING!  It also gives you the score auto insurance agents look at when giving you a quote.  It seems like the score is based on the TransUnion score.  What I found interesting was that it also pulls offers, such as credit card offers, mortgage offers, etc. that you may qualify for based on your credit score.

Coupons & Things by Dede

Today I want to talk to you about my favorite coupon clipping service-Coupons and Things by Dede.

Have you ever heard of a coupon clipping service?  Well let me tell you, when I first told my husband that I had ordered coupons he couldn't believe that I was PAYING for coupons.  But then I explained...first, you don't pay for the coupons, you pay for the time it takes others to clip the coupons for you.  I buy 3-4 newspapers a week, it takes A LOT of time to clip all those coupons! So, I think it's worth it to pay others.

Why use a coupon clipping service?  When you know of an upcoming sale, wouldn't it be great to have ample coupons for that item or those items you want to stockpile?  Instead of tracking down people who aren't using their coupons or spending more money on multiple newspapers, you can just buy XX amount of the 1 coupon you want.  Now, it's not expensive.  For example, Coupons and Things by Dede has Cheerios coupons $1.00/2 for $0.12.  That's not bad.  Now, I don't suggest you do this for 1 or 2 coupons, but if you want to buy 5 or more of something, this is the way to do it (assuming you don't have an endless supply of inserts and time for cutting.)

You can also buy whole coupon inserts.  Now, my newspaper in Central New York costs $2.00 on Sunday's.  If I wanted multiples of every insert, it would be cheaper to buy more papers...but I would also be wasting all that paper.  The pricing of inserts will vary, depending on the worth of the coupons.  For example,  Coupons and Things by Dede has last weeks inserts for $1.10 (SS) and $1.20 (PG) but the 3/27 (SS) is only $0.45.

Another great thing about Coupons and Things by Dede is the rewards program.  For each coupon or insert you order, you will earn a specific amount of points.  These accumulate over time until you are ready to use them.  Every 400 points is equivalent to $1.00 and can be used toward coupon purchases. Typically you will earn 2-5 points per coupon, so the points will add up quickly if you order frequently.

Couponing Part 1-Where to Find Coupons

There are so many places to find coupon's it can be overwhelming.  The more places you look, the more you will save.  But for now, just pick 1 or 2 from below and start with that.

The Sunday Paper

This is the most common place to find coupons. If you don't get the Sunday paper, get it!  Some say that you get more coupons with home delivery then if you buy it at the store. I have not found this to be true. Of course, the people telling me this have been the people selling the paper.  However, you do get a discount when you have the paper delivered and you can get JUST the Sunday paper delivered-that's what I do. I also go out and by 2-3 more each week for additional coupons.  You can also ask your neighbors and friends to give you the inserts they don't want.

Internet Coupons

This is my second favorite way to get coupons.  There are ton's of sites out there to print coupons, some I will list seperately below.  For this section though, I will tell you about 3 specific sites.  These are:

Redplum


One thing to know about printing coupons is that most sites have printing limits where they will only allow so many coupons to be printed before stopping the 'campaign.'  However, keep checking back as they often reset.  A common misconception about printing coupons is that they need to be in color.  Nope!  I print all mine in black and white, and I recommend this to save the most on ink.  If you really get into couponing I also recommend investing in a black and white laser printer to save money on ink. 


One last thing about printing coupons...most sites will allow you to print 2 coupons PER PRINTER.  So, if you have multiple printer access, you can print more coupons!

Store websites


Like internet coupons, but you print directly from the store website.  A bonus here is that in addition to manufactuer coupons you will also get store only coupons (and the 2 can be combined typically).  Target.com is a GREAT place for printing coupons.

Mobile Coupons

These are becoming the next biggest way to coupon.  Almost all stores now have the ability to send you mobile coupons via texting.  Check out your favorite stores websites to see if this is something they participate in.  Because this is still very new, don't be surprised when you try to use one and your cashier gives you that, 'Huh?' look.  Tell them it's ok, just scan it!

Manufacturer Websites


Perhaps the most obvious but definitely the most forgotten.  The majority of manufacturer websites have coupons on their site.  Typically you will need to sign up for their newsletter to obtain the coupon(s).

Blinkies


These are little coupon machines  you may see on the shelves in stores.  These are great when you are buying a product and don't have another coupon for it.  These will always be manufacturer coupons but they aren't typically the 'best' coupons as they can't 

Tearpads


Another on the product shelf coupon.  They get the name because it's literally a pad of coupons that you tear off.  It's ok to take more than one, but please use some coupon etiquette and not take them all.

Why/How do I coupon?

Two questions I commonly hear are, 'How do you find time to cut coupons?' and 'Is it really worth it?'  Let me start by answering the second question first.  My response is, Yessssssssssssssss!  I'll use my Price Chopper shopping trip today as an example.  My total before Advantage card and coupon savings was $213.13.  I saved $18.54 with my Advantage card and $69.47 with coupons.  I paid out of pocket (OOP) $125.12.  That's a savings of $88.01 for 1 week!  If I do this every week (which I typically do), over the course of a year I'm saving $4576.12!  That's a lot of money and that's only my savings in 1 store!

So, let's move on to the first question...how do I find time to cut coupons.  Well, first of all, I do a lot more than just cutting coupons.  Yes, I do cut...I get my newspaper delivered every Sunday and I typically by 2-3 more newspapers to cut coupons out of.  I also spend LOTS of time on the computer printing coupons.  The main place I go to print coupons is Coupons.com. There are MANY other places to print coupons and we will get to those in other posts.

Back to the original question...time...I don't have 'free' time.  I'm a wife, mother of 5-year old twins and I work full-time.  Really, what is free time?  But I do MAKE the time.  I have to, otherwise we wouldn't be able to afford anything.  I started using coupons a year ago and I really don't know how we got by without them.

Here is my challenge to you...if you don't currently use coupons, try it, just once.  Just use the ones in the newspaper next weekend.  I bet you will be surprised in the outcome.

A Little About Me

Hi there, I'm Kristen, AKA Twin Mamma. I started this blog almost a year ago but some things happened and I was unable to invest the time I wanted into it.  Therefore, I'm starting over. First, let me tell you a little about me.

I'm a wife and mother of 5 year old twins, hence the name. I work full-time out of the home as a special educator specializing in kids under 5 years of age. Over the years I've fiddled with this and that in a way to try to make money online. Some worked, some were out right scams and others I feel would have worked really well if I wanted to risk quitting my full-time job so I would have more time to invest...that I was not willing to do. I have not tried any online money making ventures in a few years, however I have dabbled with some alternate off-line ways to make some extra cash. My current big way to save money is by couponing. When you save money you are in essence, making money.

So, what is this blog going to be about? Here you will learn all about coupons-what they are, where to find them, how to use them, etc.  I will also find other ways to make and/or save money to tell you about.
